URGENT-Double Your Ad Dollars in NeTProfessional Magazine; 9/17 Deadline

For a limited time only, Macintosh Internet developers can get up to half the cost of new print advertising in the October-November issue of NeTProfessional magazine paid for by Apple. Apple Developer Relations is providing comarketing funds to match dollar-for-dollar what qualifying developers spend on advertising in the issue.

NeTProfessional, published twice a month, features Macintosh Internet solutions, including content creation, servers, intranets, and network management. The October-November issue, which has a total circulation of 50,000, will be distributed in the Apple booth at the Seybold conference in San Francisco, as well as to subscribers, selected developers' customer lists, and newsstands.

The deadline for advertising space is September 17, with final artwork due by September 19. Ad rates start at US$ 808 (you pay $ 404 after Apple's contribution) for a quarter page; a full page, normally $ 2,444, is just $ 1,222 through the program.

You can submit Macintosh Internet news items for the October-November issue to the NeTProfessional Editor, Raines Cohen, at editor@NeTProLive.com.

For more information, visit the NeTProfessional Advertising web site at http://www.NeTProLive.com/ads/, send e-mail to sales@NeTProLive.com, or call 415-957-1911, ext. 22.

PRODUCT AND TECHNOLOGY NEWS

Apple Introduces Internet Address Detectors

Apple just announced the availability of Internet Address Detectors (IAD), a technology that makes it easier for Mac OS 8 users to manage and immediately perform actions on Internet addresses within documents. With IAD, a user can select an Internet address within a document and use a contextual menu to perform a series of actions with that address--for example, launching a web browser and connecting to the selected web site. (Contextual menus constitute one of the new productivity features included with Mac OS 8.) You can now download IAD, free of charge, from this Apple web site:

Macintosh Web Servers Offer Lowest Cost of Ownership

The Business Research Group, an independent market research and consulting organization, recently published the results of a cost-of-ownership study comparing four web servers running Netscape FastTrack for UNIX, Microsoft Internet Information Server for Windows NT, O'Reilly Website for Windows 95, and StarNine's WebSTAR for the Mac OS. The study found that WebSTAR software running on a Macintosh server provides a significantly lower cost of ownership than competing servers. The Business Research Group's conclusions were based upon several factors, including costs related to purchase and installation, content creation, and server management. These advantages led to a cumulative WebSTAR/Macintosh solution cost advantage over the other servers considered in this study: as high as 300 percent per internal user, 144 percent per server, and 158 percent per web page. The Business Research Group report is posted to this web site:

Apple Decides Newton Will Stay

Citing the "tremendous potential" for the eMate 300, Apple confirmed this week that it will not proceed with the spin-off of its Newton subsidiary. The eMate 300 has already achieved great success in education--one of Apple's key markets--and Apple believes that committing its resources to the eMate will strengthen the product's current appeal in the education market and enable it to reach out to a broader audience.

In addition to the eMate, the Newton group develops mobile computing products and licensable technologies. Its handheld computer, the MessagePad 2000, has gained recognition in a number of markets.
